I obviously took a different look at melting/water than Kaye, mine was targetting melting and was more philosophical than I usually put out.
In the heat in January it felt like everything was melting like a Salvidor Dali painting, which inspired my clock, but that didn't seem enough so I played with fractured time, melting time, Einstein's theory of relativity .... whether that all came through with a bit of background slashing I don't know, but I had fun.
I look forward to seeing the others too.

January Challenge

This is my challenge quilt for January. It represents the ocean and shore. I have used mostly cotton fabrics and added beading and hand stitching for texture.

Not Selected

Here is my entry for Beneath the Southern Sky.  I can show it to you now because it wasn't selected ... which sounds so much nicer than 'rejected'.
And here is a detail shot.
And the feature fabric started off as a solid brick red/brown fabric and I painted it, wrote on it and used Shiva paintsticks and rubbing plates so that it looked like this before I cut it into circles.

I confess to being disappointed as I really liked this quilt.  I've decided to tell myself that the rest of the entries must have been bloody awesome.
I'd like some feedback from the rest of you ... what could I have done better or differently for next time?

Art theft

So it kinda copied the tree from a photo Lisa Walton posted on facebook of a wrought iron decoration. I have permission from Lisa to use the image and I tried to chase up the original artist to no avail (it was mass produced in China, not that that makes it okay), so I drew something very like it, yep too much like it. Okay I have assuaged my guilt and confessed straight away, but I still like the wall hanging so far. The back ground I made at Lisa's Vickery retreat and I am going to do some beading to bling it a bit more.

I must add that I plan to hang it in my hallway and I will never profit from this plagiarism ... is it plagiarism if it is someone else's art or is there another word for it if you are not referring to a written work???

What do you think?
Have a wonderful day, it is glorious down here in Adelaide

a lesson learned

Well I had to give it a try! But for future reference, unlabeled 15 year old fabric dyes don't give a fabulous result ... wishy washy, bland and ready for a good over-dyeing! The orange is okay, and to be honest I am not sure whether the green was always that forest colour and the purple that blah ... I reckon though if I splash a bit of yellow at the green and blue on the purple we might be in business. So on Monday I shall ring Kraft Kolour and get some decent primary colours happening!
Can't complain though, I still had fun :)

Hello All

Thanks so much for asking me to join, I too attended Lisa Waltons class with Sarah and Maggie in Alexandra, it was a great experience and my first real attempt at an art quilt. I have done some traditional quilting but have discovered that I am not the kind of gal who cares enough to match points perfectly. My quilt is a long way from being finished but I'll get there one day. Image is some dyeing attempted since attending Lisa'a workshop.

Well Hello!

Hi, Maggie has kindly invited me to become a diva which sounds like a hoot! I am living in Adelaide at the moment and am currently quilt groupless after struggling to contain my inner chaos around the quilt aficionado I have met here so far (lovely ladies with definate ideas of what is correct in quilting). I have had a fabulous, liberating time this week attending Lisa Walton's luscious landscapes course in Alexandra with Maggie. The poppies are one of two of the quilts I made during the course and I'm pretty darn happy with them if I say so myself. I have many ideas and sketches ready to jiggle with ... my biggest limitation at present is two little boys that currently take priority - most of the time :)
So I look forward to participating and being motivated to push my boundaries with you all.

My Uugly Quilt

Here is the uugly quilt I posted to Netties about.
I told you it was uugly ... and, remember, it takes 7 uglies to make a uugly.

I called it my castration quilt because, when I made it, I was working through some of the issues around my now ex-husband walking out and leaving me with Emily, with all the debts, both personal and his business (which I didn't have to pay off but his debtors didn't go away quickly) and with the embarrassment of staying married to him for SO long (almost 20 years).  So you can probably understand my reluctance to just throw it out.  But can it be saved?

Here is a closeup shot of the quilting.

I think that maybe Suzy quilted it, which is just one of the many reasons I haven't posted a photo of it either on my blog or to Netties.  Plus, I don't think I could cope with Jill one-upping me on the back story.  :-D

But I'm liking the idea of Jenny's to quilt it some more and then to paint it over with white or some neutral skin colour.  Without getting too New Age-y, it would be like when an injury heals but the underlying pain is still there.

It's about a metre by a metre and a half, so plenty of opportunity to practice my FMQ and use up some of the old-style variegated threads that change colour about every 2kms or so.  But not so big to take lots of time.

So, what do you think, fellow AQDivas?  Give it to me straight ... I can take it!
